Defending Palin, a fellow working mother

I don’t normally get into political discussions because a) it’s not all that interesting to me and b) I don’t know enough about what’s going on in politics to have an intelligent discussion on the matter. However, I feel the need to defend Sarah Palin, McCain’s running mate – not because she’s a Republican (I’m not sure where I fall on party lines at the moment) but because she’s being attacked for being a working mother.
Why is it that no one questions Obama, McCain, or Biden’s ability to be a good father but yet the second a woman runs for a major office she is attacked?? Even Meredith Vieira, a working mother herself, had the audacity to question Palin’s ability to balance work and family (check out this YouTube interview where Guiliani defends Palin – go Rudy!). How dare she?? It really ticks me off that men can get away with working full time, traveling, and playing golf (away from their family) but the second a woman steps into the spotlight, running for the 2nd most powerful position in the US, she is immediately criticized for her choice. The media did the same thing to Hillary Clinton – the poor woman didn’t have a chance! What kind of example are we setting for our children when the media crucifies any woman of power?

And to bring up the fact that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant?? All of us were 17 once, right? I don’t know about you, but my parents didn’t have much control over me! Your parents can only give you the tools to make good choices – but what you do with these tools is up to you! No parent can control every little aspect of their children’s lives, unless they put them into a prison. When do we become accountable for our own actions? This poor 17 year old has just been thrown into the spotlight because of her mother. How many of us were in the same situation (well, maybe not the actual pregnant part, but at least the “having sex and freaked out that somehow, someway we got pregnant by accident” part) or something similar where we did something stupid and were either VERY lucky or didn’t get caught/pregnant? But now this girl has to share this mistake with the world and hear how horrible her mother is to let her teenage daughter get pregnant on top of everything!

This is why I hate the media and politics – everything gets skewed to one side and both sides are NOT fairly represented. So wrong.
